Have you heard?

Before
After
Friday, December 12 while some women and children were working on scrapbooking and crafts in the late evening, the fire alarms sounded at the "Wasilla Bible Church". All the occupants were evacuated safely, but the building suffered around $1 million worth of damage. Federal officials have determined that accelerants were found around the exterior. Currently, there have been no determinations if it is connected to Sarah Palin. She reportedly commented to the Assistant Pastor that "she was sorry if the fire was connected to the 'undeserved negative attention' the church has received since she became the vice presidential candidate Aug. 29."
My Take: Have you heard about this story? I have watched CNN for the past 3 days and also the national nightly news and have not heard more than a quick closing remark. "Oh by the way, Sarah Palin's church suffered fire damage over the weekend....Now for the Person of the Week". I would like to pose this obvious question, what if it was heaven forbid, Pres. Elect Obama's former church, Trinity United Church of Christ? What would the press coverage be then? Both of their churches were in the news during the campaigns, both controversial for different reasons. Yet, someone deliberately sets Sarah Palin's church, which she still attends, on fire while people were present, and there is little outcry. Even the congregants and Pastors have given few interviews, made zero accusations, and have not demanded more press attention. They have quietly continued worshipping in a nearby high school, and began raising funds to rebuild their damaged 2 1/2 year old building. What a sad event for a small, close-knit community, which deserves more interest than a one-lined filler story between Gov. Blagojevich and more cabinet positions being filled. I am actually frustrated with myself for giving attention first to the "McCain's non-endorsement of Sarah Palin", rather than something actually newsworthy. I am only human.

I actually heard this a few days ago and I wasn't sure if it was true or not. It came to me through an email from a friend. I didn't research it further because I figured that I would have seen it on the news--which I watch EVERY night and at times during the day. I have my opinions of the bias news networks so I should have known better than to trust them.

The bigger issue is who did this and why. I am sick of the hypocracy on both sides trying to make an ugly, harmful statement that could be made so much better using different tactics. I mean, if it was about the church's obvious opposition to "gay rights" or their distain for Sarah Palin, it makes it difficult to feel like you are receiving a message from a legitimate person. The same goes for bombing abortion clinics. Really, are we going to take you seriously now? People can be sooo crazy.

I finally posted about communism under "car czar" and I'd love to know what you think. I'll get to socialism later tonight.

Yesterday Ben came home and told me Sharon Osborne had been in a fight with some other celebrity. Thinking it kind-of funny, I did an internet search, and after awhile finally found a small article on tmz.com relating a little about this story.

Why do I bring this up? Because I think Palin is a little like Sharon Osborne- if the fight had been between Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Aniston, you can bet it would have been front page fodder for weeks on every major and non-major paper/magazine. But, it was Sharon Osborne- not somebody who really sales papers. If Palin had become the first female president, certainly this would have been the headline news. But, she lost the election and went home and life continued. She isn't front page news anymore.

Now, I know you are saying, "then what about the McCain article where he said he wouldn't support her- that made the news." Well, yes, technically it did- but also in passing, it wasn't a major story. My second point, though, is that the bombing happened in Alaska. I am from Seattle, and Seattle news NEVER makes national headlines because it is tucked away in a small corner and nobody cares about what happens there. When is the last time you heard about a robbing, murder, weather report, or anything from Hawaii? If you are like me, chances are it has been a VERY long time- why? Because it is too far away from where news "happens"- New York.
I am not saying that is a good reason, I am just saying that seems to be the way it is.

Now, I definitley think Jen is right- the fact that any bombing occurred for any reason (and with people inside) is disgusting and desperately needs to be thoroughly investigated- regardless of the reason behind the bombing. It is really sad that people think bombing and killing is an acceptable way to show that one is upset...

Christina, I agree to an extent. The Palin Media Frenzy has died down over the past few weeks, where she isn't the headliner, and she doesn't need to be. And yes, the McCain 2012 incident wasn't highly covered, but I think more so than this story.
Honestly, I am most bothered with the lack of coverage of ANY religious persecution that is happening. I don't necessarily think it is 'because she is Sarah Palin and not Barack Obama' that it isn't being covered. I believe it is more because she is an evangelical, a Christian conservative. With the whole Prop 8 protests that were happening, I did not hear ANY national coverage of the vandalism that was happening to any of the churchs, or the threatening letters filled with (non-threatening) white powder, or how worshippers were being terrorized as they entered. Nothing. It seems pretty apparent that majority of media outlets look the other way when any conservative Christian religion is attacked, almost as if they deserved it for not conforming to the now accepted immoral practices. I find it rather frightening.

I am now stepping down from my soapbox. (Sorry!)

It is really sad to me that any bombing would not be covered- are we so used to hearing about bombings, murders, gang rapes, that it no longer matters when it happens on American soil? Is it no longer newsworthy?

I do know, that here in Denver at least, the Church has not wanted media involvement at all- they have purposely not told the media about the vandalism that is occurring around town (I know this from being on the Public Aggairs Committee and discussing this at meetings). Not to say that I disagree with your comment, because I don't. I wish people did see what was going on behind the scenes and that hate and bigotry are still alive and well...

I was thinking the same thing, this isn't about the fact that Sarah Palin isn't newsworthy. This is protecting the extremeists who engage in these dangerous activites to make an cruel point in an unnecessary way. The media is full of athiests and so they don't want to headline these types of stories.
