I had every intention of writing about the Tax Day Tea Parties a long time ago. But life happens! So the night before D-Day, or T-Day, I am finally putting my thoughts down! The grass-roots movement's purpose has been to connect those who advocate the free-market system, and can join in a protest against out of control government spending. Where do I sign up?
I am an advocate of the free-market system. Check.
And I have been blog-protesting against out of control government spending. Check.
Although I feel my state representatives are doing a pretty good job being a voice for us Okies, I can sympathize with those living in the states who's representatives have been quoted as saying "My constituents just don't understand." The biggest spending bills in history, which will turn into the biggest tax increases for future generations, are being voted on by people who are not listening to those that voted them into office. Taxation, without representation. A cause worthy of a Tea Party. Even in my humble state of Oklahoma, has 11 "Official Tea Parties" on schedule. But states like Texas, I counted over 70. All the conservative talking heads have jumped on the band-wagon, and will ride this to the ground. But, when it is all said and done, what will happen next?
There will be light national media coverage (other than Fox, of course!) in the name of "fairness". Several Republican representatives might have some sense knocked into them. Will this affect any of President Obama's policies? Absolutely not. I believe President Obama, Sen. Harry Reid and Cong. Nancy Pelosi are trying to push as much funding and legislation through before mid-term elections and the country revolts and they lose their winning numbers. It happened with Clinton. And how did he rule afterward the "Contract with America"? From the center. I doubt this will be a wake up call for those in the governmental trinity, Obama, Reid and Pelosi. If anything, I feel it is a unifying event for those of us who feel our country is not headed in the right direction. And what I find liberating, is that we are not unifying behind one person. But behind a movement based on common principles and traditional fiscal values. What were liberal's saying about Rush being the head of our party? I think this proves that we are in charge of our party, not one person.

Hey, come on. It's not just republicans out there with the tea. Libertarians and constitutionalists are BIG supporters of these things too.
I think you're seeing some democrats out there too. I think this multi-party movement is actually pretty unique in that regard.
I was under the impression that Obama cut taxes for the middle class, not overtaxed them.
First, this didn't start with Pres. Obama, it began with Pres. Bush. Second, the ever popular income tax might not be touched, for now, which is why I wrote the massive spending bills "will turn into the biggest tax increases for future generations". And I care more about the taxes my kids will pay than I what I pay. And there is not a plausible explanation of how we are going to pay off trillions of dollars in debt without raising EVERYONE'S taxes.
And what is considered "middle class"? Because the lower class currently does not pay taxes (or they get all of it back in tax refunds). Then that would make the "middle class" the new lower tax-paying bracket, the upper middle class the new "middle class" tax paying bracket, and the evil wealthy the upper middle class tax paying bracket. So if you follow my twisted logic, the middle class of those who ACTUALLY pay taxes, do have tax increases. But let's not include corporate taxes, pay roll taxes, social security taxes, etc. None of those raises would affect the middle class.
I love the leftist fall back argument that the middle class is getting a tax break. If you look at the history of other countries, this is what was promised to their middle class right before the country tanked. What a joke. If we do not look at history and know and understand history, we are destined to repeat it.
Govt spending is OUT OF CONTROL and it is no longer a democrat/republican issue, it is a issue with a large majority of our leaders. We have moved so far from our constitutional principles that I am wondering how valid it is anymore. I think that these Tea Parties are an incredible voice that will hopefully wake up a few people in Washington and let them know that we are not OK with our elected leaders continuing to abandon our founding principles.
I just returned from the Oklahoma City Tea Party at the state capitol. I was shocked at how many turned out to a mid-day, mid-week "Tea Party". My estimate would be over 1000. And I was relieved to find it was NOT an Obama-or-democrat-bashing protest. They called for the resignation of the republican speaker of the house here in Oklahoma for his "tax problems". But it was amazing to see so many American's using their first amendment rights of speech and assembly.
But what has been interesting to watching is CNN's coverage. Instead of asking "protestors" why they are there, ALL of the questions I saw were "Do you understand that under the stimulus plan you would be receiving a $400 tax credit?" OR (even worse) "are you opposed to creation of jobs which will happen with the stimulus money?" Sounds like unbiased journalism to me!
I'll add pictures later.
I love the rightest fall back argument of giving the tax breaks to the top one percent of earners - like Reagan and the Bush's. They sooo need it more than the middle class. You know the ones actually baring the brunt of this recession. Oh, I forgot they don't need any help. We like to keep them in their place. poor.
What countries are you talking about Jen??????????????????????????????????????How about some recent examples. Can't think of any myself. Oh ya, because there aren't any.
Oh sorry, do you still go by Marce?
Lula, if you can't keep it respectful, keep it to yourself.
And it seems in listening to his Tax Day speech, that President Obama missed the point of the Tea Parties. It is the OVER-SPENDING and OVER-EXPANSION of the federal government, which began under President Bush. He doubled the govt deficit, and President Obama is doubling his double. I wish the Tea Parties could have happened BEFORE the big business bail outs, during the campaign. But I guess we had to see trillions of dollars gone instead of just hundreds of billions. It is not necessarily the 2009 Obama tax plan that people are protesting, it is the GOVERNMENT SPENDING which will tax our children to death.
The concept of spending yourself out of a financial crisis is ridiculous. And on top of that, giving tax cuts? Where do they expect to come up with all the money to pay for all this stimulus? From the evil rich, who will then in turn cut back investing, business development, and in turn job growth. Sounds like a winner plan to me.
