Alternative Energy

"I don't mean to kvetch about this foreign oil thing, but I am becoming a meshuggener! I'm tired of listening to the constant megillah from the Washington schmos who shove their platforms up our tuchus! Oy vey! Alternative energy, is there an alternative worth all this energy?"
Discuss amongst yourselves!

Of course I am all for natural gas! (Hubby's employer!) But really, it is environmentally friendly, cheap and there's a lot of it! And companies and communities are already using natural gas vehicles. Is this the fumes of the future?

Biased comment! Your husband's lucky to be part of a multi-billion dollar industry. I agree it's cheap and there's lots of it, but it's only environmentally friendly when it's in your vehicle, not when they're extracting it from the Earth, as it is with all non-renewable fossil fuels.

Nuclear power is an option, but it produces alot of toxic waste which can be stored and treated safely, probably in Utah, of course, like all the other US garbage. The problem with that option lies not in the storage but the transportation of the waste usually by train. Do I want that train barreling down the tracks near my neighborhood? Ah, no.

Lula, just noticing that often when you speak of an industry or person who is successful or makes lots of money I sense disdain.

Just sayn'

I know intent can be misconstrued so I am not saying you do, I am just saying I sense it. Could be wrong here.

Nothing against okbushman and her lovely husband. But I am rarely a fan of big business, its why I'm a Dem.
Especially energy companies. I am particularly mad at Bush right now, which I will discuss in my next post, and his fast, term-ending legislation he's throwing in before he goes that will allow the natural gas companies to drill right next to my favorite National parks in Utah.
I just makes me a bit pissy to think about. Sorry.

Still not getting all the crankiness. I haven't said p*s*y since I was in highschool. I'm not trying to rude, it just sounds so...ugly. Anyway, I haven't found any of the "alternative energy" sources to be without their own set of issues. Given the issues, however, I still think that natural gas is probably the best way to go. It'll be interesting to see what happens after the presidential transition in January. Do you think ANYTHING will happen? I'm such a believer in the saying "campaign promises don't make policy".

My comment up there sounded rude. I stated my intention wasn't to be rude, but after re-reading it, I think it sounded rude. So, I'm already saying I'm sorry, before anyone has a chance to read it.

I LOVE the environment. I live in Colorado, have lived in Utah and Idaho. I took several classes in college that included lots to do with the outdoors. I would consider myself a conservationilst. I often go out to western Colorado where my brother-in-law has a 28,000 acre ranch (yes it is that huge). It is beautiful, they have horses and it is surrounded by several 14ers. They are actually working with the main energy company to set up windmills and/or solar pannels as sources of alternative energy for Colorado.

When 911 happened, I was still living in DC. I went to work in DC and walked past our military men and women in hummers with machine guns ready to protect on every street corner. I do not wish to destroy the environment, but I think that it is necessary that we do whatever we can to continue to protect our country so men and women don't have to walk past military vehicles on their way to work. Part of this means we need to use our natural resources so we aren't dependent on the very people who wish to inflict harm on our country. It's not possible to do it perfectly. But I think we can do it somewhat responsibly. There is so much to be enjoyed, by drilling there will be some damage done. But I think it is necessary, especially with all the unfriendly eyes that look at America. "Drill baby drill, drill baby drill" (add sarcasm here).

P.S. Lula, you discounted my nephew because he is a geologist and not a biologiest. You can do that, but I still trust what he teaches me. After all, he is a lot closer to the resources and information than I am.

Lula, are you against any sort of drilling? Of any kind? What would you propose in regards to energy if you had a choice and all the money to make it happen?
And I am SOOOO grateful for who my husband works for, not just the income but the work environment. It is an amazing company. Whether you disagree with what kind of business they run, they run it well. And I have not found anything shady or questionable, and I have looked.
Lula, I don't know if I've ever gotten to know a true environmentalist before! So I'm pleased to finally meet one!

I always find it interesting when people dislike big business yet they love the things that big business provides...which is; Your Television, the shows that are produced for your TV(amazing race....produced by big business), your car all your music and electronics, the computer and software you are using, many of your clothes, all the way down to the nails holding your house together....most are big business. Do you ever fly anywhere? Drive a car? How do you despise something that provides most of the necessities and luxuries that we have. Do you ever take medication of any kind that you find helpful? yup they are big business too. There are countries that don't have too much big business and I wouldn't want to live there as the people live in poverty because not only does it provide our living essentials it provides jobs. Don't get me wrong I think there are a lot of shaddy big businesses out there but there are many many that are good and provide a great service. The majority of the the taxes that support our country come from big business. The major portion of our charitable contributions come from people who work for big business.

Because I'm afraid my foul, unpretty language would offend this readership...

Jen said...

The foul language isn't what's offensive, it's when people feel they have to use foul language because they don't have any other words to make their point.

Ashley said...

Not offended, just trying to understand.
