First glimpse...

Between all of the "umm's" and "uhhh's", was the message President-elect Barack Obama delivered in his first press conference today. I have stated, "We will see" if he lives up to his "yes, we can!" And I think we got a small glimpse into an Obama Administration. Here was his basic, prepared message regarding the economy. He gave a list of goals he wants to accomplish during the lame-duck few months.
  • Stimulus Plan for the 'middle class'. What about the 'lower class', they deserve it the most right? Or is there no lower class? Just thought it was funny that the term has not been used by either party during the election. It's all about the 'middle class'. He hopes to get this done before he comes into office, but if not, it will be his first item of business. He also spoke about job creation, with unemployement at a new low.
  • Aiding small businesses and American companies. He talked specifically about the auto industry needing some help. And to do so with what we currently have, and add to it if necessary. I do not agree with any corporate bail-outs, hence the free-market system.
  • Bail Out Review. Make sure what Congress has done is still functioning properly.

My take: I was pleasantly surprised. And no, I did not think he would have the sickle and hammer flags hanging in the background, spouting off socialist or communist rhetoric! He had made the comment several times during his message and question/answer "see what we can do within current legislation" or "do with what you have". And I agree! I was also impressed that when Candee Crowley (I'm so familiar with the CNN commentators now!) asked about national security, and he wouldn't give her a response. Which makes me think he understands more fully what threat our country has been under and that you do need to be more cautious with foreign policy. Also, his response to Iran's President "Immaflamminwhacko" congratulatory letter needs to be 'deliberate'. He did not bash the 'current Bush administration', talked of bi-partisanship. He also showed a personable side, when Lynne asked a question and he wanted to know what happened to her bummed shoulder. The iRobot is human! He has always seemed too polished, and today he seemed human. But my favorite part was when he was asked about THE DOG, the all important presidential pet, and he referred to himself as a mutt. I thought that was great! Why couldn't he be this personable, self-depricating, and natural during the election?
My Conclusion: After a long 'take', here is the moral of the story. I want to give him every benefit of doubt, take him at his word. As far as today's message, I didn't find any red flags. If his actions meet his words from today, he might do well for our country. If his actions start matching his 'spread the wealth' comments, and turning to extreme left, I will be concerned. But so far, so good!

Okbushmans, I have not abandoned your blog, it just isn't as controversial to me because I pretty much agree with you. You say it and I all I can say is ditto. With Lula's blog, I want to debate her because I completely disagree most of the time. But I enjoy the discussions even if they totally frusterate me at times. Either way, I think that everyone is reading both, they are either just afriad to comment (like Christina) or agreeing.

I have to say on a side note, it's pretty hilarious to me that Obama already had to make a personal and public apology for mocking former First Lady, Nancy Reagan. Americans love the Reagans, not the best person to joke about your first week on the job.

You know I actually only caught the first five minutes of this, and then I got distracted. Don't have a clue what he said after that. And since I'm spilling the beans here, I only listened to parts of his acceptance speech, I think I might of been nodding off by then. Probably listened to more of McCain's.
Between every other commercial on tv the last few weeks and hearing all the blah, blah, against each other, nationally and locally, I'm alittle sick of the fancy talk from all the candidates and more ready for some action. If he's managed to mildly impress - or at least not alarm - the two of you, we'll that's saying something. That must mean I think he's off the charts fantastic! But, take heart ladies, there's always tomorrow for him to blow it...

I have been curious what you all think of some of McCain's camp going all postal on Palin.

Sarah this is my opinion, people may not comment on your blog as much because you are so well researched and articulate that it is a little intimidating. It is like reading Peggy Noonan or Michele Malkin. I would never comment there because I would be afraid I would say something and they, being so much smarter than me, would catch my lack of knowledge. I am not dising you(is that even how it is spelled) This is a huge complement to you and as your friend this blog has opened up my eyes to your talent. You and I have always loved talking about our country and our mutual conservative values but you have stepped into a place here where you can shine. I appreciate that you let me post here and there but I think I may start my own blog called "Moms not as smart but still into politics".com. LOL. I think everyone who reads your blog is like me and really respects your talent and ability. You are awesome!

Ditto that, Bray! I've been keeping up with this blog for weeks, but don't comment very often because I don't feel like I have much to add. I usually read, nod my head, read the comments, chuckle to myself, and move on. Love it, though. I, too, was pleasantly surprised by Obama's press conference yesterday. I think he's a likeable guy, on the surface, but I don't feel like I know him very well. That's the thing that bothers me most, I think. He's still a stranger in so many ways. I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt, though, because whoever our President is deserves our support and respect...until they do something blantantly to lose it. It's important to remember that, as informed as we think we are, those men know and deal with things that we have no clue about. We shouldn't be quick to judge their actions.

Not that anyone here HAS, I'm just saying....
I read the end of my comment and it sounded accusatory, so I had to clarify. ;)

Too many compliments from people I admire to make me comfortable! And good topic Lula about McCain v. Palin. I'm processing that issue, trying to find out facts, before I come to a conclusion. But initiallly I don't think it is McCain, it is staffers/political handlers who didn't like her take charge attitude. She doesn't appear to be a 'I'll follow in line' type a gal, and I'm sure she butt heads with those trying to package her. As far as her geographic knowledge, I highly doubt she didn't know Africa was a continent. And I always approach negative knowledge coming from annonymous sources as a smear campaign. If there was substance to it, why would they want to remain annonymous? They would get the best and most interviews from here to China! Thats my first take.

But why smear her now if not to try and place blame? Seems extremely lame to me, and I don't like her! I'm waiting for some sort of statement from McCain. So far haven't heard one. Republican's are generally a tight-lipped bunch and that's why this surprises me that they'd try to tag her after the election's over and she's already nestled back in her wintery wonderland. Just a thought.

I am skeptical about all the smearing. It seems more like one anonomyous person, who is pansy enough to not show face, said something and now every media outlet is repeating it which makes the story seem even bigger than it initally was. Now we have media quoting media. It's just another story that I believe is being made bigger because people LOVE gossip. You may not believe this, but I tend to get along with most people (Christina, vouch for me please), but it is impossible to get along with EVERYONE all of the time, especially under all that pressure. I wouldn't be surprised if there was someone she just simply but heads with. The alligations also seem false or at least overexaggerated because this anonomyous person said that she was a shop-a-holic and was purchasing clothing while on the campaign trail, if she was shopping all the time, don't you think the media would have been all over that. They were following her 24/7, someone would have come up with some footage by now. Also, when she was announced as VP, the media sent 100's of people up there to research her, if she was such a raging $#%* and such a Diva, someone, somewhere would have said something. They came up with pretty much nothing on her. I'm not trying to blindly give her excueses, but after hearing all about it and then putting it in perspective, it just seems silly.

I am excited because she is giving Gretta, on Fox News, her first post-campaign interview Mon. night. I am curious to see what she says. I am sure it will be a very friendly interview, Gretta seemed to have made good friends with the Palins throughout this campaign.

I really enjoy reading your blog and I learn a lot from it. I appreciate your research, in fact I'm amazed at how much you know. Do you ever sleep??? Like others, I agree with you a lot of the time so I don't comment and say it all over again--you say it better than I would. I'd like you to know that I'm grateful to you for sharing these talents, especially when others (like Lula) give you a bad time!!!

Oh, Bradford. I know where you live.

OK, I will vouch for Jen!!! This is a little scary, don't yell at me anyone:)
Actually, Jen, you and I have never really talked politics except via blog, but I will say that your husband is the best person in the world to talk politics with, and I imagine you are the same way. I completely disagree with Travis on virtually everything he believes, but when I used to talk politics with him, he always stuck to the facts, NEVER used personal attacks, he listened to my arguements without trying to interrupt me, and even though we never agreed with each other, I think we both at least learned something about the other side and came out the better for it. It was awesome! And, like I said, I am certain you are the same way- though I would never let you both tag team against me:)

And, yes, Jen is one of the sweetest and best people you will ever meet- even though she can get a litte hot headed at times (kidding, Jen about being hot headed- you are great, and everybody who knows you loves you!!!!)

It's a love fest! Obviously, I love getting into political discussions with people who disagree with me, but have a mutual respect. Everything fact or quote is subjective, and I love seeing how other people interpret things. Keep it up!
